Getting a WAV with PIP/DLA on the Motability Scheme

Can I get a mobility car?

If you receive a government allowance for your disability, you might be entitled to lease a WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle) or another accessible vehicle through the Motability Scheme. When you’re looking into disability vehicles for the first time, the process can seem stressful – especially if you’re trying to work out how you qualify for a disability car.

Wondering what cars you can get on PIP and whether WAVs are covered? Trying to figure out if you can get a Motability car on low-rate DLA or standard rate PIP? We’ve got some information to help you know what your mobility allowance can cover and whether you’ll be able to lease a WAV on the Motability Scheme.

Can I buy a Motability car (such as a WAV) with PIP or DLA?

The government has been replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) since 2013. The Motability Scheme uses PIP in much the same way as DLA, so it doesn’t matter which you get if you’re trying to lease a mobility vehicle.

If you receive the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP or the Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA and have at least a full year remaining on the award, you will be able to lease a WAV using the Motability Scheme. If you’re not a recipient of the Enhanced Rate/Higher Rate of the Mobility Component or if you don’t have a full year left, you won’t be able to lease a WAV or other mobility vehicle using the Motability Scheme.

If you were unsuccessful in your PIP assessment or reassessment, you won’t be eligible for the Motability Scheme. You still have the option of buying privately and this doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find one that’s affordable for you.

If you don’t receive an allowance yet, you can find out more about eligibility, getting assessed, and receiving payment by visiting the government website.

How much is Motability?

The Motability Scheme lets you use all or part of the mobility part of your PIP allowance – £62.55 per week as of 14/04/21 – to lease your Motability WAV. You choose the vehicle that suits you and, as these vary in price, the amount of your allowance that gets taken will depend on what sort of vehicle you want to go for.
