How do I get a WAV on the Motability Scheme ?
The Motability Scheme offers an affordable way to lease a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV). If you receive a higher rate mobility allowance then you could be entitled to lease a new or used WAV for up to five years through the Government-backed Scheme.
In exchange for your allowance you will get a comprehensive motoring package that includes everything you need to run your vehicle – all you need to do is add fuel. But how do you access the Scheme and what happens when you’re on it? Our guide will take you through the process step-by-step so you know what to expect.
1. Are you eligible to join?
The first step is to make sure you’re eligible to join the Scheme and we can help you do this. You must receive one of the following allowances:
- Higher rate mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
- Armed Forces Independent Payment (AFIP)
If you’re not sure talk to one of our advisers or use the Eligibility Checker on Motability’s website which provides some useful contact numbers.
2. Find your local WAV dealer
You can find your local WAV dealer using Motability’s postcode search tool. Every dealer has its own range of new vehicles so if you’re looking for something specific then check with them first to make sure they can do it. All dealers can help you find a nearly new WAV on the Motability Scheme.
If you’re undecided on a vehicle, we can undertake an assessment of your needs and give you some pointers on where to start. There are over 750 WAVs to choose from on the Scheme but you can quickly limit your search by answering some basic questions:
- Where in the vehicle do I want to sit?
- Who will travel with me?
- Where will the vehicle be kept?
- Would I prefer a lift or ramp?
3. Arrange a home demonstration
Once you’ve decided on a vehicle you should arrange a home demonstration. It’s absolutely free and there’s no-obligation to buy. The demonstration will give you the chance to try out the vehicle and make sure that it is right for you. It’s a good opportunity to ask any questions you have about the vehicle and the Scheme. And if you decide the vehicle isn’t right for you then we will work with you to find an alternative.
4. Order your vehicle
When you’re ready to order the vehicle, we will complete all the paperwork for you. To make the application you will need the following:
- Your Certificate of Entitlement with the duration of the award
- Proof of address such as a utility bill from the last three months
- Driving licence photocard for all those who will be insured on the vehicle
In addition to sacrificing the mobility component of your weekly allowance you will also need to pay a fixed amount up-front to help cover the cost of your vehicle. This is known as the Advance Payment and starts from £3,505 on Cartwright Mobility’s range of wheelchair accessible vehicles. If you can’t meet the cost of this payment, you can apply for a grant through the Motability charity. This is a means-tested application and funds are limited so only the highest priority cases are awarded a grant.
Our mobility advisers will follow the progress of your application and keep you updated. As soon as we receive the vehicle from the manufacturer, Cartwright Mobility’s technicians will start the job of converting it.
5. Arrange the handover
When your wheelchair accessible vehicle is ready, we will arrange to deliver it. At the handover, our mobility advisers will go through every part of the vehicle to make sure you’re happy with how it all works. You’ll be given a handbook that explains all the aspects of your conversion and who to contact if you need help.
6. Ongoing support and help
A month after the handover, we will arrange to come and visit you to make sure that everything is running smoothly. The ‘familiarisation check’ is there to make sure that you’re still happy with the vehicle. After this, we’ll be in touch every year to carry out a health check on your conversion to make sure that everything is working as it should.
Motability’s worry-free motoring package includes:
- Servicing and maintenance for the vehicle and the conversion
- MOT when the vehicle reaches three years old
- 24 hour RAC breakdown cover
- Tyre replacement or repair
- Windscreen and windows cover
- Annual car tax
- Insurance for two named drivers with the option to pay for one more
We’ll send you reminders when your vehicle’s MOT is due or its time for a service. If anything goes wrong our advisers at Cartwright Mobility are your first point of contact and they will handle everything for there.
Before the end of your lease term, we’ll give you a call to let you know that your contract is coming to an end and help you to swap your WAV for a new one or hand it back to Motability.Back to all blog posts
