What is the Access to Work Scheme?
Access to Work is a government programme that provides assistance for disabled people who are about to start or return to a job, or who need additional equipment or support to stay in work.
It covers people with disabilities, as well as physical and mental health conditions that make it hard to get to and from work or carry out the duties of their job comfortably.
It provides a wide range of support, and can fund support workers, communicators and advocates, specialist job coaches and personal care helpers, as well as a variety of kinds of specialist equipment to help with a particular need.
One of the most important facets of the Access to Work scheme is helping people physically get to work, with support for transportation.
This can take a variety of forms, from simple funding for taxis to and from work, rather than having to take public transport that fails to cater to disabled users, all the way up to helping you adapt your vehicle for your needs. You can apply for the Access to Work scheme here.
As specialists in providing wheelchair adapted vehicles, we have a great deal of experience with Access to Work at Cartwright Mobility.
Who can receive Access to Work funding?
As with any funding, there are criteria for receiving Access to Work, but it is actually quite broad. To receive the funding, you need to:
- Be over the age of 16.
- Be living in England, Scotland or Wales.
- Have a disability or health condition (either mental or physical) that makes it hard for you to get to and from work or do parts of your job.
- Currently be in, or about to start or return to paid work. This can include full, part-time and temporary employment, internships, trials, work experience and apprenticeships, as well as self-employment or starting your own business. It doesn’t cover voluntary work, though.
So, as we said, the criteria aren’t exactly narrow – the funding is there to be used!
Adapting a vehicle with Access to Work funding
The Access to Work funding can be used to cover just about any adaptation that will help you use your vehicle to get to work.
Adaptations can include modifications that aid with driving, such as steering aids and grips, keypad controls for using secondary functions with one hand, left foot accelerators, pedal extensions and guards, and much more. Take a look at the full range we offer in our own vehicle conversions here.
